Northern Roots Family Spinal Care

Therapeutic Exercise in Clear Lake

Adjustments get your spine and joints moving the way they should. Therapeutic exercise is what teaches your body to keep them that way. At Northern Roots Family Spinal Care, we build a short, specific set of corrective exercises into your care plan so the changes we make in the office actually hold up at home, at work, and on the job site.

How Therapeutic Exercise works at Northern Roots Family Spinal Care

How it works

What to expect with therapeutic exercise

  1. Step 1

    Thorough exam

We assess strength, range of motion, and movement patterns alongside your spinal exam, so we know exactly which muscles and joints need support.

  2. Step 2

    A clear, personalized plan

You get a short, specific set of exercises tied to what we found — not a generic sheet of stretches — and we explain why each one is in your plan.

  3. Step 3

    Gentle progression

We start where your body can handle it and build from there, adjusting the plan as you get stronger so exercise never sets you back.

Why patients choose it

Benefits of therapeutic exercise

Targets the specific muscles and joints that are weak, unstable, or compensating

Progresses as your body gets stronger, so exercise never sets you back

Paired with adjustments so the corrections we make in the office actually hold

Drug-free and low-tech — most plans start with simple at-home exercises, no gym required

Your doctor adjusts the plan as you improve, instead of a one-size-fits-all handout

The basics

About therapeutic exercise

Therapeutic exercise isn't the same as a workout. The goal isn't to build muscle for its own sake — it's to retrain specific muscles to do the job they've stopped doing, so the joint they're supposed to protect stops taking all the load. That's an important distinction, because generic exercise (even "core work" from a fitness app) can miss the muscles that actually matter for your particular injury, or load a joint before it's ready.

We start with the exam findings — where you're unstable, where you're weak, where your movement compensates — and build from there. Most plans start with a small number of low-load exercises done at home between visits, and progress as your adjustments hold longer and your strength improves. This is also why therapeutic exercise works best paired with chiropractic care rather than on its own: the adjustment restores proper joint motion, and the exercise makes sure the muscles around that joint can maintain it.

Who therapeutic exercise helps

A lot of patients come to us after adjustments alone haven’t held. The pain eases for a few days, then the same tight hip or the same nagging shoulder creeps back. That’s usually not a sign the adjustment didn’t work — it’s a sign the muscles and stabilizers around the joint haven’t caught up yet. Therapeutic exercise closes that gap. It’s especially useful for:

  • Patients whose pain relief from adjustments doesn’t last more than a few days
  • Anyone recovering from a disc injury, whiplash, or a work injury who needs to rebuild strength safely
  • Weekend athletes and laborers who reinjure the same spot doing the same lifting or twisting motion
  • Patients with chronic low back or neck pain tied to weak core or postural muscles
  • Post-surgical patients cleared for movement but not yet back to full strength
  • Older adults working on balance, hip strength, and fall prevention
  • Anyone who wants to stay out of our office long-term instead of coming back for the same complaint

Why we prescribe it

Also known as corrective exercise, rehab exercise, or stabilization exercise, therapeutic exercise is added to your plan for reasons the exam makes clear:

  • Instability at the joint — ligaments and small stabilizing muscles that haven’t recovered their support role after an injury
  • Muscle imbalance — one side or one muscle group compensating for a weaker one, which keeps re-loading the same joint
  • Deconditioning — general loss of strength and mobility after weeks or months of guarding a painful area
  • Poor movement patterns — bending, lifting, or sitting habits that repeatedly stress the same segment
  • Post-injury or post-surgical recovery — tissue that’s healed enough to load, but hasn’t been re-trained yet
  • Chronic postural strain — from desk work, driving, or repetitive job tasks
  • Prior injuries that never got a rehab phase — old sprains or strains that healed short, tight, or weak

How therapeutic exercise fits into your care plan

Corrective exercise rarely stands alone — it reinforces the rest of your care and gives your body the strength to hold it:

  • After spinal decompression — exercise reinforces the space and mobility decompression creates
  • After an auto accident or work injury — rebuilds strength safely once acute pain has settled
  • Alongside ongoing wellness care — keeps you moving well between adjustments, not just adjusted well
  • For athletes — corrective work targeted at the movement pattern that’s causing repeat strain
  • For chronic pain patients — addresses the muscular side of a problem adjustments alone can’t fully resolve
  • For post-surgical recovery — a bridge between medical clearance and full activity

When exercise should wait

Therapeutic exercise is safe for most people, but a few symptoms mean we examine further — or coordinate with your medical provider — before we add it:

  • Sharp, shooting, or electric pain that worsens with movement
  • New numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm or leg
  • Pain following a recent significant trauma that hasn’t been evaluated
  • Fever, unexplained weight loss, or night pain alongside your symptoms
  • Any exercise that reproduces sharp pain rather than a normal muscle “work” feeling

If any of these apply, tell us before we build your plan. Sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of a medical emergency always warrant a call to 911.

What to expect at your first visit

Most first visits run 45–60 minutes, start to finish.

  1. Consultation — We talk through your history, your pain patterns, and your goals.
  2. Exam — Strength, range of motion, and movement testing alongside a spinal exam.
  3. Report of findings — We explain exactly what we found and what we recommend, in plain language.
  4. First treatment — Your first adjustment (if appropriate) and an intro to your first exercises.

There’s no pressure to commit to a long-term plan on day one. You’ll know what we recommend, and why, before you decide anything.

Drug-free strength — without medication or surgery

Pain medication can mute the signal that something needs to change, and surgery is a big step for a problem that’s often about strength and movement, not structure. Therapeutic exercise gives your body the tools to hold its own corrections — no prescription, no downtime, no incision. It’s part of an integrated plan alongside chiropractic adjustments, not a replacement for them.

Why Clear Lake-area patients choose Northern Roots Family Spinal Care

Dr. Chase O’Keefe doesn’t hand out a generic exercise sheet — every plan starts with a real exam of what’s actually weak, unstable, or compensating in your body. We serve patients throughout Clear Lake, Turtle Lake, Amery, and the surrounding western Wisconsin communities who want a plan that keeps them out of our office long-term, not one that keeps them coming back for the same thing.

Therapeutic Exercise FAQ

Still have questions? Contact us — we're happy to help.

Is therapeutic exercise the same as physical therapy?+

It overlaps, but ours is built into your chiropractic care plan rather than a separate referral — the same doctor who adjusts you also designs and adjusts your exercises based on what he finds.

Will I need to join a gym or buy equipment?+

No. Most plans start with bodyweight or simple at-home exercises. Anything more is optional and only added if it fits your goals.

How many exercises will I be given?+

Usually a small, specific set — not a long list. The point is doing a few things well and consistently, not overwhelming you.

Will this hurt?+

You may feel normal muscle fatigue, but exercises shouldn't reproduce sharp or shooting pain. Tell us if anything doesn't feel right so we can adjust the plan.

How soon will I notice a difference?+

Many patients notice their adjustments holding longer within a few weeks of consistent exercise, though timelines vary by condition and consistency.

Do you build therapeutic exercise plans for the whole family, or just adults?+

We build age-appropriate plans for patients of all ages, including seniors working on strength and balance.

Can I do therapeutic exercise if I'm still in pain?+

Often yes — we start at a level your body can tolerate and build from there. If you're in significant pain, we'll examine first to make sure exercise is appropriate before we add it.

Is this covered by insurance?+

Coverage varies by plan. Our front desk can help you understand your specific benefits — just ask when you call.

What our Clear Lake patients say

“So grateful for the care I’m getting here! I know I would not be this far along in recovering without chiropractic care!”
AC Anna Charpentier Verified review · Google
“First time going to this chiropractor. The chiropractic office was beautiful. The team that Dr. O'Keefe has was on point for customer service. Dr. O'Keefe was polite and kind. They did X-rays to see the problem areas. I've went to chiropractors that seemed annoyed or rushing you out of the office. That or they were not gentle when they were adjusting you. And you hurt worse afterwards. But not here Dr. O'Keefe was great. I will definitely keep going back. And will tell everyone about him.”

“Very grateful to have found them. A neighbor recommended to me. Dr O'Keefe is very knowledgeable and and detailed. Evaluates the problem and comes up with a plan to help it. Very satisfied!”
